GPT Image 2 vs Flux 2 Pro

GPT Image 2 vs Flux 2 Pro on the same five prompts, with exact text, portraits, packshots and illustration compared side by side, plus real cost and speed.

Updated · Tested: GPT Image 2 (high quality); Flux 2 Pro

The verdict

Each model won one test and they tied the other three. GPT Image 2 produced the better portrait, a natural close-up where Flux over-sharpened the skin; Flux 2 Pro won the illustration by holding the three-color palette. Both spelled the sign exactly and nailed the packshot and the crowded scene. The difference is cost and time: GPT Image 2 at high quality cost several times more per image and took over a minute each, so Flux 2 Pro is the practical default and GPT Image 2 a portrait specialist.

Realistic portrait

Skin, wrinkles, beard texture and believable depth of field are where AI portraits look plastic.

Checked: Real skin texture, not waxy · Salt-and-pepper beard · Yellow oilskin hat · Overcast harbor background · Shallow depth of field

Same prompt for every model

Close-up portrait of an elderly fisherman with deep wrinkles and a salt-and-pepper beard, wearing a yellow oilskin hat, overcast harbor light, 85mm lens, shallow depth of field, documentary photograph

Nailed it
Close-up portrait of an elderly fisherman with deep wrinkles and a salt-and-pepper beard — rendered with GPT Image 2
GPT Image 237 credits ($0.37) · 95 s to render

Natural skin texture and a scuffed oilskin hat and jacket, framed tight with the background melted into soft blur. The beard reads more white than salt-and-pepper, and the harbor is only hinted at by red nets and a hull.

Mostly
Close-up portrait of an elderly fisherman with deep wrinkles and a salt-and-pepper beard — rendered with Flux 2 Pro
Flux 2 Pro8 credits ($0.08) · 8 s to render

A strong profile with a harbor crane and water melting into blur, though the hat is a yellow cap rather than an oilskin sou'wester. Over-sharpened skin and a cluster of dark blotches on the cheek look artificial at full size.

Product packshot

Glass, metal and a clean set test material rendering and restraint.

Checked: Frosted glass reads as frosted · Gold dropper · Travertine block · Eucalyptus sprig · Soft light from the left on a beige backdrop

Same prompt for every model

A frosted glass skincare serum bottle with a gold dropper standing on a travertine block, a sprig of eucalyptus beside it, soft window light from the left, plain beige backdrop, clean beauty product photography

Nailed it
A frosted glass skincare serum bottle with a gold dropper standing on a travertine block — rendered with GPT Image 2
GPT Image 237 credits ($0.37) · 79 s to render

A restrained, catalog-style frame: clearly frosted glass, a gold collar, travertine, eucalyptus and window shadows raking from the left across a beige wall. Its invented "LUMIÈRE" label stays legible down to the small print.

Nailed it

Flux 2 Pro8 credits ($0.08) · 7 s to render

Unbranded and clean: the glass reads as frosted, the gold collar is brushed rather than shiny, and a beam from the left falls across a beige backdrop and a banded travertine slab with eucalyptus.

Exact text on a sign

Spelling two lines of quoted text exactly is still the clearest separator between image models.

Checked: "BLUE HOUR COFFEE" spelled exactly · "EST. 1987" spelled exactly · Cream serif letters on enamel · Red brick wall · Late afternoon sun

Same prompt for every model

A vintage enamel shop sign mounted on a red brick wall that reads "BLUE HOUR COFFEE" in cream serif letters, with "EST. 1987" in smaller letters underneath, late afternoon sun, photograph

Nailed it
A vintage enamel shop sign mounted on a red brick wall that reads "BLUE HOUR COFFEE" in cream serif letters — rendered with GPT Image 2
GPT Image 237 credits ($0.37) · 81 s to render

Both lines exact in cream serif on a weathered blue enamel plate with rusted edges and corner screws. A diagonal shadow across the wall sells the late-afternoon sun.

Nailed it
A vintage enamel shop sign mounted on a red brick wall that reads "BLUE HOUR COFFEE" in cream serif letters — rendered with Flux 2 Pro
Flux 2 Pro8 credits ($0.08) · 8 s to render

Both lines spelled exactly in cream serif on navy enamel with realistic chipping at the corners. Warm sun catches only the top right, so the light reads late but a little dim.

Crowded scene, many details

A long list of people, props and actions shows whether a model follows the whole brief or only the first half.

Checked: Three kids · Girl in a red raincoat painting stars · Boy with glasses taping fins · Toddler with a colander helmet · Golden retriever watching · Cardboard rocket · Toys on the grass

Same prompt for every model

Three kids building a cardboard rocket in a sunny backyard: a girl in a red raincoat painting stars on it, a boy with glasses taping on the fins, a toddler wearing a colander as a helmet, a golden retriever watching, toys scattered on the grass, warm afternoon light, photograph

Three kids building a cardboard rocket in a sunny backyard — rendered with GPT Image 2
GPT Image 237 credits ($0.37) · 103 s to render

Every item lands, including a ladybug-print red raincoat, a tape roll on the fin and a giggling toddler in a colander. Warm low sun and a seated retriever looking on finish the brief.

Flux 2 Pro8 credits ($0.08) · 13 s to render

Seven of seven: the girl paints stars, the boy wraps tape where the fins meet the body, and toys and paint pots fill the grass under golden backlight. The toddler's colander looks more like a steel bowl with a few holes.

Flat illustration

Style control: a limited palette and flat vector look are easy to describe and easy to miss.

Checked: Flat vector look · Teal, mustard and coral only · Cat asleep on books · Rain on the window · Paper grain

Same prompt for every model

Flat vector illustration of a cozy reading nook with a cat asleep on a stack of books, a window with rain outside, limited palette of teal, mustard and coral, subtle paper grain, children's book style

Mostly
Flat vector illustration of a cozy reading nook with a cat asleep on a stack of books — rendered with GPT Image 2
GPT Image 253 credits ($0.53) · 109 s to render

A warm, well-composed nook with strong paper grain, rain and a cat asleep on four correctly spelled books. Dark browns, gray and a black-and-white cat break the three-color palette.

Nailed it

Flux 2 Pro8 credits ($0.08) · 11 s to render

Flat shapes, visible paper grain and a palette held to teal, sandy mustard and coral, with a ginger cat asleep on a book stack beneath a rainy window.

Questions people ask

Is GPT Image 2 better than Flux 2 Pro?+

Not overall. In our test each won one category (GPT Image 2 the portrait, Flux 2 Pro the illustration) and they tied on three. Flux 2 Pro was far cheaper and faster.

Which handles text better?+

Both spelled our two-line sign exactly in a cream serif. For text-heavy design work, test your own layout, but neither failed here.

Why is GPT Image 2 more expensive?+

We ran it at its high-quality setting, which is billed at a higher rate and renders much more slowly. Lower settings cost less but were not part of this test.
